OpenAI has added Google Cloud (GOOGL, Financial) to its list of vendors, alongside utilizing services from Microsoft (MSFT), Oracle (ORCL), and CoreWeave (CRWV) to enhance its computational capacity. This move reflects the massive computing resources required to train and deploy AI models, reshaping the AI industry's competitive landscape.
OpenAI's collaboration with Google marks a strategic effort to diversify its computing sources and lessen its reliance on Microsoft, a major supporter. Google's cloud division, which is smaller and started later compared to Amazon and Microsoft, gains a significant partnership with this deal. Google's infrastructure will be operational in the US, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, and the UK.
Earlier this year, OpenAI partnered with SoftBank and Oracle in a $500 billion Stargate infrastructure project and secured a multi-billion dollar agreement with CoreWeave to boost its computing power. Microsoft's Azure was previously the sole data center provider for OpenAI until January, when Microsoft agreed to adjust its exclusivity terms, granting priority access instead.
