In January we started a Best Idea Contest. The winner will be awarded cash of up to $1,000. You can see the performances of the contest portfolios here.

We can see that among the contest portfolios entered by the users, 58% outperformed the S&P500. 5% of all contest portfolios outperformed S&P500 by more than 50% over the last 5 months. 18% outperformed by more than 20%!

Among the best performers, energy and gold stocks are largely responsible for their outperformance. These are some of the best performing stocks in the contest portfolio: Freeport-McMoRan (FCX, Financial), Consol Energy (CNX, Financial), WPX Energy (WPX, Financial). Popular picks such as Apple (AAPL, Financial), Gilead (GILD, Financial), IBM (IBM, Financial) didn’t do as well.

We are going announce the winner of the contest in January 2017. In the meantime, we are going to start another contest by the end of June. Please be prepared to enter your best ideas.

Again these are the rules for the January 2016 contest. The next contest will have similar rules:

How Will the Contest Be Ranked?

1. The contest will last 12 months, until January 2017

2. The performances of the stocks included in the portfolio will be averaged, and the result will be used for the ranking

3. The ideas are for long only

4. Only the portfolios that have outperformed the S&P 500 qualify for the ranking and reward

5. Each user can only have one contest portfolio

6. The cash reward will be sent to the user through PayPal or check within 30 days after the finish of the 12-month contest period

7. We will select three winners. The best performer will be awarded $1000, and the next two best performers will be awarded $500 each

The recent market decline is presenting better opportunities for value investors. Participate in the contest and win up to $1000 in cash.
