U.S. market indexes were higher on Friday with the Dow Jones and Nasdaq Composite reaching new highs. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20624.05 for a gain of 4.28 points or 0.02%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2351.16 for a gain of 3.94 points or 0.17%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5838.58 for a gain of 23.68 points or 0.41%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 11.41 for a loss of -0.35 points or -2.98%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 1.73%. The S&P 500 gained 1.49% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.80%.

Friday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading on Friday included the following:

  • E-commerce retail sales increased to a quarterly rate of 1.9% SAAR.
  • The Conference Board Leading Economic Index increased 0.6% in January.
  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count decreased to 1,082.
