Dow Jones closes with a loss of -0.03% for the week

U.S. market indexes were lower on Friday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,656.10 for a loss of 6.85 points or 0.03%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,355.54 for a loss of 1.95 points or 0.08%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,877.81 for a loss of 1.14 points or 0.02%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 12.94 for a gain of 0.55 points or 4.36%.

For the week, the Dow Jones lost 0.03%. The S&P 500 was lower by 0.30%, and the Nasdaq Composite decreased by 0.56%.

Friday’s market movers

A U.S. air strike on Syria and weaker-than-expected jobs data affected stocks on Friday. Economic reports included the following:

  • The Employment Situation report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed an increase of 98,000 jobs in April. The report was below consensus of 175,000. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.5%.
  • Wholesale trade increased by 0.4% for the month.
  • The Baker-Hughes North American rig count decreased to 971. Oil prices were higher on Friday with WTI crude oil increasing to $52.21, and Brent crude oil increasing to $55.17.
  • Consumer credit increased by $15.2 billion in April. The increase beat the consensus estimate of $15.0 billion and also followed an increase of $8.8 billion.

In the broad market, utilities stocks led losses. Technology was also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.06%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,364.71 for a gain of 0.29 points or 0.02%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 827.49 for a loss of 0.38 points or 0.05%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,190.18 for a loss of 2.27 points or 0.03%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,539.43 for a loss of 8.85 points or 0.09%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,706.35 for a loss of 1.70 points or 0.10%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,042.71 for a loss of 0.95 points or 0.09%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,395.64 for a loss of 1.01 points or 0.07%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,305.82 for a loss of 1.03 points or 0.08%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 651.05 for a loss of 1.61 points or 0.25%.
