U.S. market indexes were mostly lower Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,975.78 for a loss of 36.50 points or 0.17%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,396.92 for a loss of 2.46 points or 0.10%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at a new high of 6,120.59 for a gain of 17.93 points or 0.29%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 9.98 for a gain of 0.21 points or 2.15%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Technology stocks were higher for the day with the Nasdaq reaching a new high. In the broad market, stocks were mostly lower with a decrease in oil prices and geopolitical risks affecting valuations.

Economic reports released on Tuesday included the following:

  • The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index remained basically unchanged at 104.5 following a previous report of 104.7.
  • Wholesale trade inventories increased by 0.2% for the month following a previous increase of 0.3%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,391.86 for a gain of 0.22 points or 0.02%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 847.23 for a gain of 1.09 points or 0.13%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,388.42 for a gain of 18.93 points or 0.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,529.55 for a loss of 53.56 points or 0.56%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,727.83 for a loss of 4.17 points or 0.24%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,060.62 for a loss of 2.07 points or 0.19%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,420.14 for a loss of 1.18 points or 0.08%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,328.46 for a loss of 1.21 points or 0.09%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 652.76 for a loss of 2.64 points or 0.40%.
