U.S. market indexes were lower on Thursday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20919.42 for a loss of -23.69 points or -0.11%. The S&P 500 closed at 2394.44 for a loss of -5.19 points or -0.22%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6115.96 for a loss of -13.18 points or -0.22%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 10.59 for a gain of 0.38 points or 3.72%.

Thursday’s market movers

Disappointing retail stock earnings weighed on valuations for the day. Economic reports affecting trading included the following:

  • Jobless claims decreased by 2,000 for the week to 236,000.
  • The Producer Price Index increased by 0.5% for the month and reported an annual increase of 2.5%.
