Dow Jones Ends the Week 0.45% Lower

Stocks lower for the second week

U.S. market indexes regained more of their midweek losses on Friday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20804.84 for a gain of 141.82 points or 0.69%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2381.73 for a gain of 16.01 points or 0.68%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6083.70 for a gain of 28.57 points or 0.47%. The VIX Volatility Index closed at 12.04 for a loss of -2.62 points or -17.87%.

Stocks reported their second week of losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down -0.45%, the S&P 500 was down -0.39% and the Nasdaq Composite decreased -0.64%.

Friday’s market movers

The Baker Hughes rig count report was the only report on the economic calendar on Friday. The rig count decreased by 21 and oil prices gained for the day. WTI crude oil gained 1.99% to $50.33 and Brent crude oil gained 2.09% to $53.61.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains for the day:

Caterpillar (CAT, Financial) 2.21%

General Electric (GE, Financial) 2.07%.

Boeing (BA, Financial) 1.89%.

Wal-Mart (WMT, Financial) 1.59%.

United Technologies (UTX, Financial) 1.50%.

Chevron (CVX, Financial) 1.28%.

DuPont (DD, Financial) 1.01%.

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 0.98%.

In the broad market, industrial stocks led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.58%.

Small-Cap Stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1367.33 for a gain of 6.25 points or 0.46%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 828.12 for a gain of 3.88 points or 0.47%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8286.48 for a gain of 45.22 points or 0.55%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9353.85 for a gain of 66.09 points or 0.71%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1712.08 for a gain of 17.04 points or 1.01%; the S&P 100 Index at 1050.79 for a gain of 6.35 points or 0.61%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1409.90 for a gain of 9.56 points or 0.68%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1320.02 for a gain of 9.19 points or 0.70%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 648.39 for a gain of 4.98 points or 0.77%.
