For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,184.04 for a loss of 22.25 points or 0.10%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,436.10 for a loss of 2.97 points or 0.12%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,295.68 for a loss of 10.11 points or 0.16%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 10.07 for a gain of 0.32 points or 3.28%.
Monday’s market movers
Uncertainty from events this week kept valuations lower on Monday. The FBI director will testify this week, the U.K. has its election, and the European Central Bank has a monetary policy meeting. Terror attacks in the U.K. also added to the uncertainty.
Economic reports released on Monday included the following:
- Productivity and costs reported a 0% quarterly growth rate on a seasonally adjusted annual basis with unit labor costs reporting an increase of 2.2%.
- The PMI Services Index was reported at 53.6, increasing from 53.1.
- Factory orders decreased 0.2% for the month.
- The ISM Manufacturing Index was reported at 56.9, decreasing from 57.5.
