US Market Indexes Lower With Tech Stock Losses

U.S. market indexes were lower on Monday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,235.67 for a loss of 36.30 points or 0.17%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,429.39 for a loss of 2.38 points or 0.10%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,175.46 for a loss of 32.45 points or 0.52%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 11.46 for a gain of 0.76 points or 7.10%.

Monday’s market movers

Tech stocks continued to lead market losses on Monday with the S&P 500 technology sector down 0.59%. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Apple (AAPL, Financial) led losses with a decrease of 2.39%.

The Treasury budget was the only leading report on the economic calendar for the day. The Treasury reported a deficit of -$88.4 billion.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,419.21 for a loss of 2.50 points or 0.18%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 862.36 for a loss of 1.75 points or 0.20%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,507.30 for a loss of 23.00 points or 0.27%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,684.60 for a gain of 15.71 points or 0.16%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,759.00 for a gain of 1.46 points or 0.08%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,070.71 for a loss of 1.19 points or 0.11%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,439.97 for a loss of 1.28 points or 0.09%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,346.41 for a loss of 1.10 points or 0.08%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 666.85 for a gain of 1.54 points or 0.23%.
