Lower Oil Prices Affect US Market Indexes

U.S. market indexes were lower Tuesday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21467.14 for a loss of -61.85 points or -0.29%. The S&P 500 closed at 2437.03 for a loss of -16.43 points or -0.67%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6188.03 for a loss of -50.98 points or -0.82%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 10.89 for a gain of 0.52 points or 5.01%.

Tuesday’s market movers

A bearish outlook on oil prices affected stock market valuations Tuesday. WTI crude oil decreased -2.09% to $43.50 and Brent crude decreased -1.96% to $45.99. No market-moving reports were released on Tuesday.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

General Electric (GE, Financial) -2.33%

Intel (INTC, Financial) -1.83%

Disney (DIS, Financial) -1.36%

In the broad market, energy stocks led losses with the S&P 500 energy sector down -1.28%. Technology was also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.80%.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8471.61 for a loss of -89.92 points or -1.05%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9512.78 for a loss of -107.35 points or -1.12%.
