U.S. market indexes were mixed with technology stocks leading gains.

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,478.17 for a loss of 1.10 points or 0.01%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,432.54 for a gain of 3.53 points or 0.15%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,150.86 for a gain of 40.80 points or 0.67%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 11.02 for a loss of 0.20 points or 1.78%.

Wednesday's market movers

Economic reports affecting trading for the day included the following:

  • The Federal Reserve released the minutes from its June monetary policy meeting which showed plans for decreasing its balance sheet.
  • Factory orders decreased 0.8% for the month following a decrease of 0.3% in the previous month. Factory orders were also below consensus of -0.5%.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,581.16 for a loss of 7.62 points or 0.09%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,582.48 for a loss of 77.35 points or 0.80%.
