U.S. market indexes were lower on Thursday.

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,320.04 for a loss of 158.13 points or 0.74%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,409.75 for a loss of 22.79 points or 0.94%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,089.46 for a loss of 61.39 points or 1.00%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 12.54 for a gain of 1.47 points or 13.28%.

Thursday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Mortgage Bankers Association's mortgage applications index reported a 1.4% increase for the week.
  • The Freddie Mac mortgage market survey showed an increase in weekly average mortgage rates with the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage at 3.96% and the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage at 3.22%.
  • The ADP employment report showed an increase of 158,000 jobs in the private sector.
  • International trade reported a deficit of $46.5 billion.
  • Jobless claims increased by 4,000 to 248,000.
  • The PMI Services Index increased to 54.2 from 53.6.
  • The ISM Non-Manufacturing Index increased to 57.4 from 56.9.
  • The EIA Petroleum Status report showed a decrease of 6.3 million barrels in oil inventory for the week.

In the broad market, real estate stocks led losses. Technology stocks were also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.91%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,400.81 for a loss of 19.33 points or 1.36%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 845.07 for a loss of 12.18 points or 1.42%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,459.64 for a loss of 121.52 points or 1.42%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,464.33 for a loss of 118.15 points or 1.23%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,730.75 for a loss of 21.19 points or 1.21%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,062.75 for a loss of 10.02 points or 0.93%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,427.16 for a loss of 14.64 points or 1.02%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,334.88 for a loss of 13.30 points or 0.99%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 653.88 for a loss of 6.59 points or 1.00%.
