Dow Jones falls to 22,085.34

U.S. market indexes were lower Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,085.34 for a loss of 33.08 points or 0.15%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,474.92 for a loss of 5.99 points or 0.24%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,370.46 for a loss of 13.31 points or 0.21%. The VIX Volatility Index gained for the day at 11.06, increasing 1.13 points or 11.38%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Stocks were lower Tuesday with global tension between President Donald Trump and North Korea after it was reported North Korea has created new nuclear weapons. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day. On the economic calendar, the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index was the leading report for the day, increasing to 105.2 from 103.6.

In the broad market, materials stocks led losses. Technology stocks were also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.14%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,410.15 for a loss of 4.02 points or 0.28%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 851.48 for a loss of 3.27 points or 0.38%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,553.92 for a loss of 29.30 points or 0.34%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,603.38 for a loss of 15.75 points or 0.16%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,748.01 for a loss of 4.89 points or 0.28%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,095.22 for a loss of 1.99 points or 0.18%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,462.98 for a loss of 3.69 points or 0.25%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,370.42 for a loss of 3.42 points or 0.25%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 663.80 for a loss of 1.12 points or 0.17%.
