US Market Indexes Higher on Monday With Continued Gains

Dow Jones and S&P 500 report new highs

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,331.35 for a gain of 63.01 points or 0.28%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,503.87 for a gain of 3.64 points or 0.15%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,454.64 for a gain of 6.17 points or 0.10%. The VIX Volatility Index was down for the day at 10.10 for a loss of -0.07 points or -0.69%.

Monday’s market movers

The Dow Jones and S&P 500 reported another day of new highs. The Housing Market Index was the only leading report on the economic calendar Monday. The Index decreased to 64 from 67.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

General Electric (GE, Financial) 2.21%

Caterpillar (CAT, Financial) 2.03%

Boeing (BA, Financial) 1.64%

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 1.42%

In the broad market, financial and industrial stocks led gains. Technology stocks were also higher. The S&P 500 technology sector increased 0.09%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,441.08 for a gain of 9.37 points or 0.65%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 867.15 for a gain of 6.31 points or 0.73%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,787.11 for a gain of 55.48 points or 0.64%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,682.23 for a gain of 44.70 points or 0.46%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,762.22 for a gain of 8.31 points or 0.47%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,106.26 for a gain of 1.15 points or 0.10%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,482.53 for a gain of 3.25 points or 0.22%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1387.78 for a gain of 2.55 points or 0.18%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 668.29 for a gain of 0.15 points or 0.02%.
