US Market Indexes Gain, Financial and Tech Stocks Higher

U.S. market indexes were higher on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,340.71 for a gain of 56.39 points or 0.25%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,507.04 for a gain of 10.20 points or 0.41%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,453.26 for a gain of 73.10 points or 1.15%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 9.78 for a loss of -0.39 points or -3.83%.

Wednesday’s market movers

Gains in financial and technology stocks helped indexes to move higher. Economic reports affecting market trading for the day included the following:

  • The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index decreased -0.5% for the week.
  • Durable goods orders increased 1.7% for the month and 5.1% for the year.
  • The Pending Homes Sales Index decreased -2.6%.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

United Technologies (UTX, Financial) 2.14%

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 2.10%

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 1.58%

In the S&P 500, financials and technology led gains. The S&P 500 financial sector gained 1.28% and the S&P 500 technology sector gained 1.02%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,484.81 for a gain of 27.95 points or 1.92%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 899.58 for a gain of 17.81 points or 2.02%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,998.61 for a gain of 150.28 points or 1.70%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,949.92 for a gain of 118.80 points or 1.21%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,790.16 for a gain of 16.45 points or 0.93%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,107.37 for a gain of 4.16 points or 0.38%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,488.37 for a gain of 7.91 points or 0.53%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,390.22 for a gain of 5.80 points or 0.42%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 669.97 for a loss of -0.22 points or -0.03%.
