The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day, closing at 11.23 for a gain of 0.07 points or 0.63%.
Wednesday’s market movers
Stocks were lower with disappointing earnings from some high-profile companies on Wednesday. Chipotle (CMG, Financial) and Alaska Air Group (ALK, Financial) missed revenue and earnings estimates with both stocks down over 10%.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index was down -4.6%.
- Durable goods orders increased 2.2% for the month and 8.3% for the year.
- The FHFA House Price Index increased 0.7% for the month and 6.6% for the year.
- New home sales increased to a seasonally adjusted average rate of 667,000 from 561,000.
