US Market Indexes Gain on Friday

S&P 500 and Nasdaq close at new highs

U.S. market indexes were higher on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,434.19 for a gain of 33.33 points or 0.14%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,581.07 for a gain of 20.67 points or 0.81%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,701.26 for a gain of 144.49 points or 2.20%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 9.79 for a loss of -1.51 points or -13.36%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.45%, the S&P 500 gained 0.22% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.07%.

Friday’s market movers

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq closed at new highs on Friday. Strong earnings from Amazon (AMZN, Financial), Alphabet (GOOGL, Financial) (GOOG, Financial), Intel (INTC, Financial) and Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) helped stock indexes to gain.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The third-quarter GDP report showed a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 3%.
  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 100.7 from 101.1.

In the broad market, technology led gains. The S&P 500 technology sector gained 2.69%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,508.32 for a gain of 10.86 points or 0.73%. The S&P 600 closed at 916.43 for a gain of 5.21 points or 0.57%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,130.17 for a gain of 65.87 points or 0.73%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,091.80 for a gain of 39.85 points or 0.40%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,839.12 for a gain of 9.85 points or 0.54%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,140.09 for a gain of 12.61 points or 1.12%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,529.83 for a gain of 11.80 points or 0.78%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,430.34 for a gain of 11.10 points or 0.78%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 680.86 for a loss of -0.44 points or -0.06%.
