US Market Indexes Gain on Thursday, Dow Jones Closes at New High

U.S. market indexes gained on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,837.51 for a gain of 63.21 points or 0.26%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2,687.54 for a gain of 4.92 points or 0.18%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,950.16 for a gain of 10.82 points or 0.16%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 10.19 for a loss of -0.28 points or -2.67%.

Thursday’s market movers

The Dow Jones reported its 71st record close in 2017. Real estate and materials stocks led gains for the day. Energy stocks were also higher with increasing oil prices.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • International trade reported a deficit of -$69.7 billion.
  • Jobless claims were reported at 245,000.
  • Retail inventories increased 0.1%.
  • Wholesale inventories increased 0.7%.
  • The EIA Petroleum Status Report showed a decrease of -4.6 million barrels of oil inventory.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,548.93 for a gain of 4.99 points or 0.32%. The S&P 600 Index closed at 943.40 for a gain of 3.69 points or 0.39%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,500.33 for a gain of 27.08 points or 0.29%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,303.18 for a gain of 34.34 points or 0.33%.
