US Market Indexes Lower Wednesday

U.S. market indexes were lower Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,893.35 for a loss of -19.42 points or -0.08%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,681.66 for a loss of -13.48 points or -0.50%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,051.98 for a loss of -63.90 points or -0.90%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 27.73 for a loss of -2.25 points or -7.51%.

Wednesday’s market movers

Rising yields continued to be a factor causing losses in U.S. market indexes. All three leading indexes finished lower on Wednesday. The energy and technology sectors led losses.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index increased 0.7% for the week.
  • The EIA Petroleum Status report showed an increase of 1.9 million barrels for the week.
  • Consumer credit reported an increase of $18.4 billion in December.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,361.23 for a loss of -10.39 points or -0.11%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,835.97 for a loss of -5.20 points or -0.05%.
