U.S. market indexes were lower on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,706.41 for a loss of -193.00 points or -0.78%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,711.45 for a loss of -18.68 points or -0.68%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,351.63 for a loss of -59.69 points or -0.81%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 14.57 with a gain of 1.64 points or 12.68%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Tuesday ended an eight-day run of consecutive gains for the Dow Jones. Treasuries were a key factor for the market Tuesday as investors watched 10-year Treasury yields climb to 3.08%. Sectors leading losses for the day included real estate, health care and technology.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Retail sales reported a monthly increase of 0.3%.
  • Business inventories were unchanged for the month of March following a previous increase of 0.6%.
  • The National Association of Home Builders’ Housing Market Index increased to 70.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,600.34 with no change. The S&P 600 closed at 982.43 for a gain of 0.30 points or 0.03%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,941.29 for a loss of -8.02 points or -0.08%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,162.47 for a gain of 1.12 points or 0.01%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,930.67 for a loss of -4.56 points or -0.24%; the S&P 100 at 1,192.81 for a loss of -9.25 points or -0.77%; the Russell 3000 at 1,609.65 for a loss of -9.76 points or -0.60%; the Russell 1000 at 1,503.91 for a loss of -9.88 points or -0.65%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 692.46 for a loss of -1.80 points or -0.26%.
