S&P 500 has a gain of 3.64% for the year

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,580.89 on Friday with a gain of 119.19 points or 0.49%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,754.88 for a gain of 5.12 points or 0.19%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,692.82 for a loss of -20.13 points or -0.26%. The VIX Volatility Index closed at 13.75 for a loss of -0.89 points or -6.08%.

For the week, the Dow reported a loss of -2%, the S&P 500 was down -0.9% and the Nasdaq Composite decreased by -0.7%.

Year to date, the Nasdaq Composite has a gain of 11.99%, the S&P 500 has gained 3.64% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has a return of -0.19%.

Friday’s market movers

Large-cap multinationals gained on Friday with less of an impact from trade concerns. Meanwhile, technology ended the week lower, pushing the Nasdaq Composite to a weekly loss of -0.7%.

The energy sector got a boost from an OPEC announcement that increased production levels by less than expected. Oil prices gained and the S&P 500 energy sector reported a gain of 2.0%.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Purchasing Managers’ Index increased to 56.0 from 55.7.
  • The Baker Hughes rig count increased to 1,212 from 1,198.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,685.58 for a loss of -3.37 points or -0.20%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,042.57 for a gain of 0.16 points or 0.02%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,410.23 for a loss of -31.93 points or -0.31%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,556.05 for a gain of 41.05 points or 0.39%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,989.61 for a gain of 2.27 points or 0.11%; the S&P 100 at 1,209.70 for a gain of 2.62 points or 0.22%; the Russell 3000 at 1,643.39 for a gain of 2.46 points or 0.15%; the Russell 1000 at 1,531.34 for a gain of 2.76 points or 0.18%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 701.02 for a gain of 2.86 points or 0.41%.
