Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq report gains for the week

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,456.48 on Friday with a gain of 99.74 points or 0.41%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,759.82 for a gain of 23.21 points or 0.85%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,688.39 for a gain of 101.96 points or 1.34%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.37 with a loss of -1.60 points or -10.69%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.8%, the S&P 500 gained 1.5% and the Nasdaq returned 2.4%.

Year to date, the Dow Jones has a loss of -1.35%, the S&P 500 has a gain of 2.38% and the Nasdaq Composite has a return of 9.06%.

Friday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes were higher Friday with a strong jobs report and some greater insight from the Federal Open Market Committee’s perspective on new trade terms following Thursday’s June FOMC minutes. Sectors leading gains for the day included health care, technology and consumer discretionary. Top contributors for the day included Biogen (BIIB, Financial), Carvana (CVNA, Financial) and Elevate Credit (ELVT, Financial).

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The June Employment report showed an increase of 213,000 jobs, beating consensus of 190,000. The unemployment rate increased 20 basis points to 4.0%.
  • International trade reported a deficit of -$43.1 billion.
  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count increased to 1,234 from 1,219.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,694.05 for a gain of 14.57 points or 0.87%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,049.94 for a gain of 8.38 points or 0.80%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,446.76 for a gain of 109.09 points or 1.06%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,555.70 for a gain of 72.56 points or 0.69%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,989.49 for a gain of 15.09 points or 0.76%; the S&P 100 at 1,213.34 for a gain of 10.81 points or 0.90%; the Russell 3000 at 1,646.30 for a gain of 14.13 points or 0.87%; the Russell 1000 at 1,533.62 for a gain of 13.16 points or 0.87%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 711.08 for a gain of 4.53 points or 0.64%.
