U.S. market indexes were higher Friday with a strong jobs report and some greater insight from the Federal Open Market Committee’s perspective on new trade terms following Thursday’s June FOMC minutes. Sectors leading gains for the day included health care, technology and consumer discretionary. Top contributors for the day included Biogen (BIIB, Financial), Carvana (CVNA, Financial) and Elevate Credit (ELVT, Financial).
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The June Employment report showed an increase of 213,000 jobs, beating consensus of 190,000. The unemployment rate increased 20 basis points to 4.0%.
- International trade reported a deficit of -$43.1 billion.
- The Baker Hughes North American rig count increased to 1,234 from 1,219.
