US Market Indexes Report Another Day of Gains on Tuesday

S&P 500 closes at 2,793.84 with a gain of 0.35%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,919.66 on Tuesday with a gain of 143.07 points or 0.58%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,793.84 for a gain of 9.67 points or 0.35%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,759.20 for a gain of 3.00 points or 0.04%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.61 for a loss of -0.08 points or -0.63%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes reported their fourth consecutive day of gains as investors remained optimistic on the labor market and second-quarter earnings. Sectors leading gains on Tuesday included consumer staples, utilities, materials and energy. Top contributors for the day included Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG), HP (NYSE:HPQ) and Lowe’s (NYSE:LOW).

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index decreased to 107.2 from 107.8.
  • The Treasury reported auctions at the following rates: four-week bills 1.850%, three-year notes 2.685%.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,484.39 for a loss of -43.67 points or -0.41%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,602.63 for a loss of -30.16 points or -0.28%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 2,008.12 for a loss of -1.03 points or -0.05%; the S&P 100 at 1,229.89 for a gain of 5.01 points or 0.41%; the Russell 3000 at 1,664.53 for a gain of 4.10 points or 0.25%; the Russell 1000 at 1,551.94 for a gain of 4.84 points or 0.31%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 712.38 for a gain of 3.64 points or 0.51%.
