US Market Indexes Close Higher on Friday

Nasdaq Composite reports another record close

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,019.41 on Friday with a gain of 94.52 points or 0.38%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,801.31 for a gain of 3.02 points or 0.11%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,825.98 for a gain of 2.06 points or 0.03%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.17 with a loss of -0.41 points or -3.26%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 2.3%, the S&P 500 gained 1.5% and the Nasdaq Composite reported a return of 1.8%.

Year to date, the Dow Jones is up 1.77%, the S&P 500 has a gain of 5.58% and the Nasdaq Composite has a return of 13.58%.

Friday’s market movers

A relatively positive start to second-quarter earnings from big banks and a continued rally in tech stocks helped U.S. market indexes to close higher Friday. The Nasdaq Composite closed with another record high. In the broad market, consumer staples, energy and industrials led gains for the day.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Import and export prices were released Friday. Import prices increased 4.3% for the year and export prices increased 5.3%.
  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 97.1 from 98.2.
  • The Federal Reserve provided its Semiannual Monetary Policy Report, which will be followed by testimonies from Fed Chair Jerome Powell on Tuesday before a Senate committee and Wednesday before a House committee.
  • The Baker Hughes rig count increased to 1,251 from 1,234.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,687.08 with a loss of -3.20 points or -0.19%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,045.81 for a loss of -0.83 points or -0.08%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,473.66 for a loss of -8.70 points or -0.08%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,484.40 for a loss of -16.69 points or -0.16%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,996.35 for a loss of -0.38 points or -0.02%; the S&P 100 at 1,235.91 for a gain of 1.21 points or 0.10%; the Russell 3000 at 1,667.36 for a gain of 1.08 points or 0.06%; the Russell 1000 at 1,555.46 for a gain of 1.34 points or 0.09%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 708.08 for a loss of -0.04 points or -0.01%.
