The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,241.94 on Tuesday with a gain of 197.65 points or 0.79%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,820.40 for a gain of 13.42 points or 0.48%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,840.77 for a loss of -1.11 points or -0.01%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.37 for a loss of -0.25 points or -1.98%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes were mostly higher Tuesday as positive second-quarter earnings fueled gains. Alphabet's Google (GOOG, Financial) was a top contributor, reporting a gain of 3.54% after its earnings report. Sectors leading gains in the S&P 500 included materials, energy and health care.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The FHFA House Price Index reported a monthly increase of 0.2% and an annual increase of 6.4%.
  • The PMI Composite decreased to 55.9.
  • The Treasury held the following auctions: four-week bills 1.880%, two-year notes 2.657%.
