The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,414.10 on Wednesday with a gain of 172.16 points or 0.68%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,846.07 for a gain of 25.67 points or 0.91%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,932.24 for a gain of 91.47 points or 1.17%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.29 for a loss of -0.12 points or -0.97%.

Wednesday’s market movers

Positive second-quarter earnings helped U.S. market indexes to gain Wednesday. Sectors leading the day’s gains included industrials, health care and technology.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index decreased -0.2% for the week.
  • New home sales decreased to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 631,000.
  • The EIA Petroleum status report showed an oil inventory decrease of -6.1 million barrels for the week.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,445.82 for a gain of 66.03 points or 0.64%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,478.95 for a loss of -15.56 points or -0.15%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,988.56 for a gain of 5.55 points or 0.28%; the S&P 100 at 1,260.50 for a gain of 10.56 points or 0.84%; the Russell 3000 at 1,688.60 for a gain of 14.12 points or 0.84%; the Russell 1000 at 1,577.08 for a gain of 13.89 points or 0.89%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 706.65 for a gain of 1.97 points or 0.28%.
