US Market Indexes Close Mostly Lower Thursday, Tech Leads Losses

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,527.07 on Thursday with a gain of 112.97 points or 0.44%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,837.44 for a loss of -8.63 points or -0.30%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,852.18 for a loss of -80.05 points or -1.01%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.14 for a loss of -0.15 points or -1.22%.

Thursday’s market movers

Losses in technology dragged U.S. market indexes lower on Thursday. The S&P 500 technology sector was down -1.51% and the Nasdaq Composite fell -1.01%. Facebook (FB, Financial) was a detractor for the day, falling -18.96% to $176.26 after its earnings report.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Mortgage rates increased. The Freddie Mac weekly mortgage market survey showed the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage average increasing to 4.54% from 4.52%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage average increased to 4.02% from 4.00%.
  • Durable goods orders reported a 1% monthly increase.
  • International trade reported a deficit of -$68.3 billion.
  • Jobless claims increased by 9,000 to 217,000.
  • Retail inventories reported no change after a 0.4% increase in the previous month.
  • Wholesale inventories reported no change after a 0.5% increase in the previous month.
  • The Federal Reserve balance sheet showed a weekly decrease in assets of -$13.9 billion for a total of $4.278 trillion.
