US Market Indexes Close Lower on Monday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,306.83 on Monday with a loss of -144.23 points or -0.57%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,802.60 for a loss of -16.22 points or -0.58%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,630.00 for a loss of -107.42 points or -1.39%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 14.26 for a gain of 1.23 points or 9.44%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes were lower Monday after mixed earnings results and further decreases among tech stocks. In the S&P 500, the technology sector led losses with a decrease of -1.56%. The industrial and consumer discretionary sectors followed technology, both reporting losses for the day of greater than -0.75%.

Pending Home Sales was the only major report on the economic calendar Monday. Pending home sales reported a 0.9% monthly increase. On Monday, the Treasury also held auctions for three-month and six-month bills at the following rates:

  • Three-month: 2.00%
  • Six-month: 2.160%

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 7,630.00 for a loss of -107.42 points or -1.39%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,036.56 for a loss of -4.74 points or -0.46%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,163.54 for a loss of -112.73 points or -1.10%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,479.24 for a gain of 1.31 points or 0.01%.
