US Market Indexes Continue Gains on Monday

Dow Jones closes at 25,758.69 with a gain of 0.35%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,758.69 on Monday with a gain of 89.37 points or 0.35%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,857.05 for a gain of 6.92 points or 0.24%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,821.01 for a gain of 4.68 points or 0.06%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.49 for a loss of -0.15 points or -1.19%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes continued gains on Monday with investors more optimistic about trade with China following the announcement of negotiations that are scheduled to be resolved by November. A Reuters interview with comments from President Donald Trump slowed some of the market’s positive momentum in the late afternoon after the president criticized the Federal Reserve’s plans for higher interest rates. Sectors leading gains for the day included consumer discretionary, materials, industrials and energy.

There were no major reports on the economic calendar Monday. The Treasury held auctions for three-month and six-month bills at the following rates: three-month, 2.035%; six-month, 2.185%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,698.69 for a gain of 5.75 points or 0.34%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,076.42 for a gain of 3.83 points or 0.36%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,540.17 for a gain of 36.60 points or 0.35%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,684.33 for a gain of 46.95 points or 0.44%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 2,018.44 for a gain of 8.25 points or 0.41%; the S&P 100 at 1,264.24 for a gain of 1.92 points or 0.15%; the Russell 3000 at 1,697.07 for a gain of 4.44 points or 0.26%; the Russell 1000 at 1,584.60 for a gain of 4.05 points or 0.26%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 726.71 for a gain of 3.18 points or 0.44%.
