Year to date, the Dow Jones has gained 6.61%, the S&P 500 has gained 8.90% and the Nasdaq Composite has a return of 15.30%.
Friday’s market movers
International trade was a significant factor for U.S. equities on Friday. The U.S. and Canada continued trade negotiations. The U.S. also announced new tariff plans for China that would affect another $267 billion worth of goods, bringing the total amount of additional tariff threats to $467 billion. In the S&P 500, real estate and utilities led losses for the day.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The August Employment Situation report showed an increase of 201,000 jobs. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.9%.
- The Baker Hughes North American rig count reported a total of 1,252 oil rigs, down from 1,276 in the previous week.
