The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,971.06 on Tuesday with a gain of 113.99 points or 0.44%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,887.89 for a gain of 10.76 points or 0.37%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,972.47 with a gain of 48.31 points or 0.61%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.22 for a loss of -0.94 points or -6.64%.

Tuesday’s market movers

No major political trade reports helped stocks to gain on Tuesday. Energy and technology stocks led gains for the day. Oil prices were higher as Hurricane Florence threatened some supply. In the Nasdaq, top gainers included Tilray (TLRY, Financial) and Integrated Device Technology (IDTI, Financial).

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index increased to 108.8 from 107.9.
  • Wholesale trade inventories reported a 0.6% monthly increase.
  • The Treasury held auctions for four-week bills, 52-week bills and three-year notes at the following rates: four-week, 1.975%; 52-week, 2.465%; three-year, 2.821%.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,777.46 for a gain of 32.39 points or 0.30%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,610.24 for a loss of -12.53 points or -0.12%.
