US Market Indexes Close Mostly Flat, Continue Year-to-Date Gains

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,458.31 on Friday with a gain of 18.38 points or 0.07%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,913.98 for a loss of -0.02 points or -0.01%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,046.35 for a gain of 4.38 points or 0.05%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.31 for a loss of -0.10 points or -0.81%.

Year to date, the Nasdaq Composite has a gain of 17.02%, the S&P 500 has a gain of 10.35% and the Dow Jones has returned 8.45%.

Friday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes closed mostly flat on Friday. The Federal Reserve’s interest rate increase Wednesday helped to support a positive outlook on the economy while also boosting Treasury yields and drawing more investor attention to risk-off trades. Sectors leading gains for the year now include consumer discretionary and technology.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Personal Income and Outlays report was released on Friday. Monthly personal income increased 0.3%. The PCE Price Index reported an annual increase of 2.2%.
  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 100.1 from 96.2.
  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count decreased to 1,232 from 1,250.
