Dow Jones reports 15th record close in 2018

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,828.39 on Wednesday with a gain of 54.45 points or 0.20%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,925.51 for a gain of 2.08 points or 0.07%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,025.09 for a gain of 25.54 points or 0.32%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 11.73 for a loss of -0.32 points or -2.66%.

Wednesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes continued to show positive momentum with strong economic data reports and the final arrangements of a trilateral agreement with Canada. The Dow Jones reported another new closing high for its 15th in 2018 and is nearing the 27,000 milestone. Across the market sectors leading gains for the day included financial, energy, industrial and technology.

In single stock news Wednesday:

  • Upwork (UPWK, Financial) began trading with its initial public offering at $15, reporting a 41.20% gain.
  • PayPal (PYPL, Financial) announced news that it would incorporate payments with gas station retailers, reporting a 0.54% gain.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The ADP employment report showed an increase of 230,000 in September, following an increase of 168,000.
  • Markit services PMI for September increased to 53.5 from 52.9.
  • The ISM Non-Manufacturing Business Activity Index for September increased to 65.2 from 60.7.
  • The MBA Mortgage Applications Index was unchanged after a 2.9% increase in the previous week.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,472.65 for a gain of 88.74 points or 0.85%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,277.87 for a gain of 74.06 points or 0.73%.
