US Market Indexes Fall Further, Dow Closes With -3.15% Loss

Tech stocks lead losses Wednesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,598.74 on Wednesday with a loss of -831.83 points or -3.15%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,785.68 for a loss of -94.66 points or -3.29%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,422.05 for a loss of -315.97 points or -4.08%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 22.27 for a gain of 6.32 points or 39.62%.

Wednesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes continued their risk-off selling with all of the major indexes closing with losses. Investors bet on the falling trend and also awaited the beginning of earnings reports, causing many sectors and index exchange-traded funds to report record losses. In the S&P 500, the technology sector led losses with a decrease of -4.50%.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index was down -1.7%.
  • The Producer Price Index increased 0.2% in September and reported a 2.6% annual increase.
  • Wholesale inventories increased 1% in August.
  • The Treasury held the following auctions: three-year note at 2.989%, 10-year note at 3.225%

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,575.91 for a loss of -45.95 points or -2.83%. The S&P 600 closed at 987.79 for a loss of -28.15 points or -2.77%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,804.90 for a loss of -308.43 points or -3.05%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,964.36 for a loss of -207.21 points or -2.04%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,905.27 for a loss of -51.58 points or -2.64%; the S&P 100 at 1,240.10 for a loss of -43.50 points or -3.39%; the Russell 3000 at 1,643.03 for a loss of -54.80 points or -3.23%; the Russell 1000 at 1,539.51 for a loss of -51.83 points or -3.26%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,767.48 for a loss of -967.43 points or -3.25%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 704.04 for a loss of -12.75 points or -1.78%.
