Earnings reports help stocks to gain

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,798.42 on Tuesday with a gain of 547.87 points or 2.17%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,809.92 for a gain of 59.13 points or 2.15%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,645.49 for a gain of 214.75 points or 2.89%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 17.76 for a loss of -3.54 points or -16.62%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes closed with strong gains Tuesday, helping stocks to regain ground after last week’s selloff. Positive second-quarter earnings reports fueled buying. Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) and Morgan Stanley (MS, Financial) rounded out the last of the earnings reports from the big banks. Goldman Sachs beat earnings expectations by 86 cents and Morgan Stanley beat by 17 cents. In the S&P 500, technology and health care led gains for the day.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Industrial production increased 0.3% in September and 5.1% annually.
  • The NAHB Housing Market Index increased to 68 from 67.
  • The Treasury held a four-week bill auction with a rate of 2.155%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,596.84 for a gain of 43.74 points or 2.82%. The S&P 600 closed at 996.79 for a gain of 26.26 points or 2.71%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,991.30 for a gain of 273.37 points or 2.81%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,842.39 for a gain of 168.40 points or 1.74%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,918.39 for a gain of 39.25 points or 2.09%; the S&P 100 at 1,250.46 for a gain of 25.97 points or 2.12%; the Russell 3000 at 1,659.24 for a gain of 36.11 points or 2.22%; the Russell 1000 at 1,554.25 for a gain of 33.13 points or 2.18%; the Wilshire 5000 at 29,082.40 for a gain of 636.98 points or 2.24%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 699.18 points for a gain of 9.59 points or 1.39%.
