Not too many value investors know who Charlie Dreifus is, I certainly didn't. He's Morningstart's 2008 fund manager of the year and for good reason. His approach to stock selection is solid and he has delivered exceptional returns over the years. Below is the interview Morningstar.com conducted with the 5 Star fund manager.

Notes:

  • Screens ROIC, Free Cash Flow, little leverage
  • Based investment philosophy on Ben Graham, Warren Buffett & Abe Briloff (teacher in graduate school.)
  • Enjoys reading financial statements, doesn't look at it as a job.
  • Every step of security analysis is based on trying to reduce risk

  • Looks for inefficiencies in the market place
  • Has doubts about small caps out performing in the near future
