US Market Indexes Continue Losses Thursday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22859.60 on Thursday with a loss of -464.06 points or -1.99%. The S&P 500 closed at 2467.42 for a loss of -39.54 points or -1.58%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6528.41 for a loss of -108.42 points or -1.63%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 28.38 for a gain of 2.80 points or 10.95%.

Thursday’s market movers

Fears over a potential partial government shutdown were a main concern on Thursday. President Trump has threatened not to sign a Senate appropriations bill averting shutdown unless Congress agrees to $5 billion in extra funds for the U.S. southern border wall.

The leading U.S. market indexes ended with correction territory returns as noted below:

  • S&P 500 (as of September 2018): -14.6%
  • DJIA (as of January 2018): -12.8%
