Tuesday's market movers

Stocks ended with gains Tuesday, regaining some ground to push year-to-date returns higher. For the year, the S&P 500 is now up 4.1%. A report from China on new stimulus plans to help their economy was a contributor for the day. Several detractors, however, capped gains. Internationally, the U.K. government voted against a Brexit plan proposed by Prime Minister Theresa May, which creates more uncertainty for Brexit and Europe. JPMorgan's (JPM, Financial) earnings also disappointed investors. The bank missed earnings per share estimates by 23 cents and revenue estimates by $100 million, with a 29% decrease in fixed-income results from the previous quarter. Across the industry, investors were also concerned with mortgage lending at the big banks and the prolonged government shutdown. On Tuesday, the government shutdown entered its 25th day with Democrats refusing to meet with the Trump administration for a lunch at the White House to discuss negotiations.

On the economic calendar Tuesday, the Producer Price Index was the only major report. The Index decreased 0.2% in December and increased 2.5% annually.
