GuruFocus Introduces All-in-One Screener 2.0

We have made several improvements to our Screener

March 15, 2019 | About:

We are proud to announce we have launched a new version of our All-in-One Screener, which we will refer to as “All-in-One Screener 2.0.”

Figure 1 illustrates a sample screen shot of Screener 2.0, which contains sections like Screens, Regions and Filters. We will discuss the “Views” section later.

Figure 1

Introduction and access

As the name suggests, the All-in-One Guru Screener allows you to screen for companies from an eclectic variety of filters, ranging from profitability filters, valuation filters and guru filters. The Screener allows you to take key investing strategies from Benjamin Graham, Peter Lynch and Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B) CEO Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio) and apply them to your investing strategy.

The Screener contains over 500 filters; however, the Customized Filters feature, which we will discuss later, boosts the number of filters to essentially infinity.

To access the Screener, please click on the “All-in-one Guru Screener” item underneath the Screeners tab. The Screener should be the first item underneath the “Value Screeners” section, as Figure 2 illustrates.

Figure 2

Screens

GuruFocus has developed several predefined screens, ranging from Graham’s lost formula to the Walter Schloss Screen. To select one of the predefined screens, please click on the “GuruFocus Screens” item and then select the desired screen from the drop-down menu, as Figure 3 illustrates.

Figure 3

Regions

As illustrated in Figure 4, GuruFocus offers nine subscription regions: U.S., Canada, U.K./Ireland, Europe, Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa and India. You can choose the regions you wish to include in the Screener by placing check marks in the box next to the desired regions.

Figure 4

Filters

You can set values for a wide variety of fields, including financial strength, profitability, price-earnings ratio and dividend yield. Figure 5 illustrates a sample screen shot, where the “Financial Strength” and "Piotroski F-score" filters are both set to at least 7.

Figure 5

Views

The “Views” section replaces the “screener results area” from the old version of the All-in-One Screener. In Screener 2.0, a view is defined as a table of columns showing the results from the screen. By default, you will see the “Active Filters” view, as Figure 6 illustrates.

Figure 6

You can save the current table as a new view by directly entering the name of the view in the “Save New View” box. Figure 7 illustrates the location of this box in the gray ribbon that starts with “40/Page.”

Figure 7

You can then download a view to Excel using the “Download” button shown in Figure 8. Premium members can only download the first 1,000 entries; you must upgrade to Premium Plus to access the “Download All Fields” and “Download First 5,000 Records” items.

Figure 8

Backtesting

Once you create a user-defined investing strategy from the All-in-One Screener, you may want to “backtest” the strategy and determine its outperformance relative to the Standard & Poor’s 500 index exchange-traded fund. The Backtesting feature allows you to test your investing strategy using a model portfolio generated from the screen filters.

As Figure 9 illustrates, the Backtesting feature requires the following parameters: number of stocks, rank by, ASC / DESC, screen date, rebalance frequency and initial investment.

Figure 9

Once you finish setting all required parameters, please click on the “Go” button to run the backtesting. You will then see the test results: stocks, performance charts and tables.

Conclusions

The All-in-One Screener is probably one of the biggest features of our website. Premium members have full access to the Screener except for the following: backtesting and historical-data screening beyond the past three years, downloading more than 1,000 stock rows and downloading all fields.

Disclosure: No positions.

The new screener is junk. Especially if you use the Customized section. Please change it back. I do not know why people are always trying to make things look better instead of thinking about the user. The simpler it is to use the better.
