Stocks Close Higher Tuesday, Investors Still Watching China Trade

S&P 500 gains 0.80%

May 14, 2019 | About:

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,532.05 on Tuesday with a gain of 207.06 points or 0.82%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,834.41 for a gain of 22.54 points or 0.80%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,734.49 for a gain of 87.47 points or 1.14%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 18.06 for a loss of 2.49 points or -12.12%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes closed higher Tuesday, rebounding after sharp selloffs followed new China trade announcements. On Monday, China announced it would take countermeasures to retaliate against the U.S.’s increased tariffs on $200 billion worth of goods instituted on Friday. China’s new tariffs leave some time for continued negotiation since they won’t take effect until June 1. Still, investors will remain cautious over the next few weeks. China is only expected to raise tariffs on some of the $60 billion worth of goods it has already identified and will reportedly institute scaled tariff increases. Regardless, the U.S. is now taking steps to tax nearly everything China imports, which could cause more market shocks in the near term.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Business Optimism Index increased to 103.5 in April from 101.8.
  • Import and export prices were released. Export prices increased 0.2% in April and 0.3% year over year. Import prices increased 0.2% in April and decreased 0.2% year over year.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,543.06 for a gain of 20.06 points or 1.32%. The S&P 600 closed at 944.77 for a gain of 10.09 points or 1.08%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,790.88 for a gain of 136.25 points or 1.41%; the Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,538.75 for a gain of 79.88 points or 0.84%.
