Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes closed higher Tuesday, rebounding after sharp selloffs followed new China trade announcements. On Monday, China announced it would take countermeasures to retaliate against the U.S.’s increased tariffs on $200 billion worth of goods instituted on Friday. China’s new tariffs leave some time for continued negotiation since they won’t take effect until June 1. Still, investors will remain cautious over the next few weeks. China is only expected to raise tariffs on some of the $60 billion worth of goods it has already identified and will reportedly institute scaled tariff increases. Regardless, the U.S. is now taking steps to tax nearly everything China imports, which could cause more market shocks in the near term.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Business Optimism Index increased to 103.5 in April from 101.8.
  • Import and export prices were released. Export prices increased 0.2% in April and 0.3% year over year. Import prices increased 0.2% in April and decreased 0.2% year over year.
