Ennis tops 1st-quarter earnings estimates

U.S. stock market indexes were mostly lower on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.13% to 26,754, the S&P 500 index slid 0.07% to 2,948 and the Nasdaq Composite Index declined 0.24% to 8,012.

Shares of Ennis Inc. (EBF, Financial) rose 9% on Monday after the company announced first-quarter results. Revenue grew 15.6 % from the prior-year quarter to $108.03 million, beating analysts’ expectations by $4.56 million. Earnings were 37 cents per share, topping estimates by 3 cents.

“We are pleased with our performance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2020," Chairman, President and CEO Keith Walters said. "Our gross profit margin showed a nice improvement over the sequential quarter, increasing from 28.9% to 30.3%, as did EBITDA which increased over the sequential quarter from $15.4 million to $17.7 million, representing 15.3% and 16.4% of sales, respectively.”

During the quarter, the company repurchased over 62,000 shares of common stock at an average price of $19.54 per share.

The main European stock markets traded mostly lower. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 gained 0.12%, France's CAC 40 dipped 0.12%, Germany's Dax slid 0.53% and Spain's IBEX 35 fell 0.38%.

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.13%, India’s BSE Sensex declined 0.18%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.14% and China's Shanghai Composite closed 0.21% higher.
