US Indexes Close Mostly Flat Thursday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 27,094.79 on Thursday with a loss of 52.29 points or -0.19%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,006.79 for a gain of 0.06 points or 0.01%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,182.88 for a gain of 5.49 points or 0.07%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 14.05 for a gain of 0.10 points or 0.72%.

Thursday’s market movers

U.S. indexes closed mostly flat Thursday as investors digested the Federal Reserve’s rate cut and watched developments in U.S.-China trade negotiations. Investors were also following earnings results from the second quarter, with MarketWatch releasing a report showing the S&P 500 in an earnings recession with two consecutive quarters of earnings per share decreases at -0.29% and -0.35%.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • U.S. international transactions showed a deficit of $128.2 billion in the second quarter of 2019, improving from -$136.2 billion in the first quarter.
  • Jobless claims increased to 208,000 from 206,000.
  • Existing home sales increased 1.3% in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.49 million.
  • The Conference Board’s Leading Economic Indicators Index was unchanged in August, following an increase of 0.4%.
  • The Treasury held auctions for four-week bills at a rate of 1.95%, eight-week bills at a rate of 1.95% and 10-Year TIPS at a rate of 0.174%.
  • Freddie Mac’s weekly mortgage market survey showed mortgage rates increasing. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.73%, increasing from 3.56%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.21%, increasing from 3.09%.

In the S&P 500, the health care sector led gains and the industrial sector led losses. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains and losses:

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,561.47 for a loss of 6.87 points or -0.44%. The S&P 600 closed at 965.34 for a loss of 5 points or -0.52%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 9,985.83 for a loss of -29.94 points or -0.30%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,499.03 for a loss of 30.05 points or -0.32%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,949.66 for a loss of 3.77 points or -0.19%; the S&P 100 at 1,328.66 for a gain of 0.54 points or 0.041%; the Nasdaq 100 at 7,901.79 for a gain of 13.24 points or 0.17%; the Russell 3000 at 1,763.28 for a loss of 0.50 points or -0.029%; the Russell 1000 at 1,662.08 for a gain of 0.0046 points or 0.00028%; the Wilshire 5000 at 30,756.45 for a loss of 9.34 points or -0.030%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 725.40 for a loss of 3.39 points or -0.47%.
