US Indexes Close Higher on the Last Day of September

S&P 500 is up 18.7% for the year

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,916.83 on Monday with a gain of 96.58 points or 0.36%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,976.74 for a gain of 14.95 points or 0.50%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,999.34 for a gain of 59.71 points or 0.75%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 16.46 for a loss of 0.76 points or -4.41%.

For the month of September, the Nasdaq was up 1.6%, the S&P 500 was up approximately 2% and the Dow Jones gained approximately 3%. For the third quarter, the Dow Jones and S&P 500 gained approximately 1.2% and the Nasdaq was down 0.1%. Year to date, the Nasdaq is up 20.6%, the S&P 500 is up 18.7% and the Dow Jones is up 15.4%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. indexes closed higher on the last trading day of September. Stock demand was helped by reports that the U.S. is not considering blocking Chinese companies from listing on U.S. market exchanges. The news followed rumors from last week that blocking listings might be part of the U.S.’s negotiations in trade talks with China. Apple’s (AAPL, Financial) stock was also a contributor to gains for the day, climbing 2.28% after a rating upgrade from JPMorgan.

There were no major reports on the economic calendar Monday. The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 1.840% and six-month bills at a rate of 1.795%.

In the S&P 500, the technology, health care and consumer discretionary sectors led gains. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,523.37 for a gain of 2.90 points or 0.19%. The S&P 600 closed at 947.72 for a gain of 1.41 points or 0.15%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 9,694.74 for a gain of 34.69 points or 0.36%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,451.44 for a gain of 18.56 points or 0.20%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,935.48 for a gain of 12.74 points or 0.66%; the S&P 100 at 1,315.25 for a gain of 6.59 points or 0.50%; the Nasdaq 100 at 7,749.45 for a gain of 67.87 points or 0.88%; the Russell 3000 at 1,742.69 for a gain of 8.69 points or 0.50%; the Russell 1000 at 1,644.18 for a gain of 8.56 points or 0.52%; the Wilshire 5000 at 30,402.41 for a gain of 146.90 points or 0.49%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 729.65 for a gain of 2.12 points or 0.29%.
