We are pleased to announce we have added a new feature to our Screeners page: Upcoming Special Dividends.

Definition of a special dividend

Investopedia defines a special dividend as a “nonrecurring distribution of company assets, usually in the form of cash, to shareholders.” Such dividends are usually larger than regular dividends and often tied to specific events like asset sales, spinoffs or other windfall events.

Companies might also announce a special dividend after exceptionally strong earnings results as a way to distribute the profits directly to shareholders. Such signals, which include increasing the company’s regular dividend, usually lead to boosts in share prices.

Consider investing in dividend-paying stocks as yields near lows

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (

GS, Financial), a major bank holding of  Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio)’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK.A, Financial)(BRK.B, Financial), said in a Aug. 19 note that with the 10-year Treasury constant maturity rate close to a three-year low of 1.5, investors should “look for opportunities in dividend stocks.”
