U.S. large-cap indexes led stocks to a mostly positive close on Monday. The U.S. announced a 90-day extension for U.S. businesses to obtain the licenses to do business with Huawei. China trade negotiation news was positive overall, and the central bank of China lowered a key borrowing rate that should provide stimulus for the country. In the Dow Jones, retail stocks were higher ahead of retail earnings releases this week, including Home Depot (HD, Financial) and Target (TGT, Financial).
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The NAHB Housing Market Index decreased to 70 this month from last month's 71.
- The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 1.565% and six-month bills at a rate of 1.550%
- The Treasury's Treasury International Capital report showed overall net capital flows of $70.5 billion in September, foreign bond investment of $-30.5 billion and net long-term flows of $-41.1 billion.
In the S&P 500, consumer staples, consumer discretionary and technology led gains. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:
