GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Asta Funding Inc through its subsidiaries is engaged in the business of acquiring, managing, servicing and recovering on portfolios of consumer receivables.

Asta Funding Inc was incorporated in New Jersey on July 7, 1994 and was reincorporated in Delaware on October 12, 1995, as the result of a merger with a Delaware corporation. The Company together with its wholly owned operating subsidiaries is engaged in the business of acquiring, managing, servicing and recovering on portfolios of consumer receivables. The Comapny has four reportable segments: Consumer receivables, Personal injury claims, structured settlements and disability advocacy. Consumer receivables: segment is engaged in the business of purchasing, managing for its own account and servicing distressed consumer receivables, including charged off receivables, semi-performing receivables and performing receivables. The primary charged-off receivables are accounts that have been written-off by the originators and may have been previously serviced by collection agencies. Personal injury claims: Pegasus Funding, LLC , an 80% owned subsidiary, purchases interests in personal injury claims from claimants who are a party to personal injury litigation. Pegasus advances to each claimant funds on a non-recourse basis at an agreed upon interest rate, in anticipation of a future settlement. Structured settlements: CBC purchases periodic structured settlements and annuity policies from individuals in exchange for a lump sum payment. GAR Disability Advocates is a non-attorney advocacy group, which obtains and represents individuals nationwide in their claims for social security disability and supplemental security income benefits from the Social Security Administration. These portfolios generally consist of various consumer receivables such as charged-off receivables which accounts that have been written-off by the originators and may have been previously serviced by collection agencies; semi-performing receivables which accounts where the debtor is currently making partial or irregular monthly payments, but the accounts may have been written-off by the originators; and Performing receivables which accounts where the debtor is making regular monthly payments that may or may not have been delinquent in the past. A portion of its distressed consumer receivables are MasterCard, Visa and other credit card accounts which were charged-off by the issuers or providers for non-payment. The business is subject to federal and state regulations.
