Aetrium Incorporated was incorporated in Minnesota in December 1982. The Company designs, manufactures and markets a variety of electromechanical equipment used in the handling and testing of integrated circuits, or ICs, which constitute the highest revenue component of the semiconductor industry. Its focus is on high volume ICs, the latest IC package designs, and ICs using advanced geometry designs. The Company's products are purchased mainly by semiconductor manufacturers and their foundry and assembly and test subcontractors. Its products are used in the test, assembly and packaging, or TAP, segment of semiconductor manufacturing, and also in advanced reliability test labs at wafer manufacturing sites. Its products automate critical functions to improve manufacturing yield, raise quality levels, increase product reliability and reduce manufacturing costs. The Company has two main equipment product lines: Test Handler Products and Reliability Test Equipment. Its line of gravity feed test handler products incorporates thermal conditioning, contacting and automated handling technologies to provide automated handling of ICs during production test cycles. The Company also offers change kits to adapt its test handlers to different IC package configurations or to upgrade installed equipment for enhanced performance. The main focus of its reliability test equipment is to provide semiconductor manufacturers with structural performance data to aid in the evaluation and improvement of IC designs and manufacturing processes to increase IC yield and reliability. The Company markets its products through a combination of direct salespeople, independent sales representatives and international distributors. The semiconductor capital equipment market is highly competitive. The companies with which it competes directly in the test handler market include Multitest Electronic Systems GmbH, Rasco, and Yokogawa. The market for its reliability test equipment is also highly competitive and its competitors include QualiTau, Ltd. Chiron Technology Pte. Ltd., ESPEC Corp., and Reedholm Instruments Co.
