GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

NIC Inc provides eGovernment services, which helps government use the Internet to reduce internal costs, increase efficiencies and provides services to businesses and citizens.

NIC Inc was incorporated in December, 1997. The Company is a provider of eGovernment services that helps governments use the Internet to increase internal efficiencies and provides service to businesses and citizens. The Company accomplishes this currently through two divisions; its portal outsourcing businesses and its software & services businesses. In the Company's primary portal outsourcing business, it enters into long-term contracts with governments to design, build and operate Web-based portals on their behalf. Its portals consist of Web sites and applications it has built that allow businesses and citizens to access government information online and complete transactions, including applying for a permit, retrieving driver's license records or filing a government mandated form or report. The Company's self-funding business model is one where it absorbs the costs to build the portal's technical infrastructure and develop eGovernment services. After the applications have launched, and its government partners share a portion of the fees generated from electronic transactions. NIC's software & services businesses mainly include its Uniform Commercial Code and corporate filings software development and ethics & elections businesses. The Company offers UCC applications through several of its state portals, typically through the Secretary of State's office. Currently, the Company has 29 portals through which it provides outsourced portal services to state governments. The Company's ethics & elections business, NIC Technologies, designs and develops online campaign expenditure and ethics compliance systems for federal and state government agencies. NIC Technologies currently derives portion of its revenues from a contract with the FMCSA to develop and manage the PSP for motor carriers nationwide, using a self-funded, transaction-based business model. The Company faces intense competition in all sectors of its business. It has designed government portals and applications to be compatible with virtually any existing system and to be rapidly deployable.
