GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Air Lease Corp is a U.S based aircraft leasing company. Its main source of revenue comes through the leasing of narrow and wide-bodied jet aircrafts primarily in the European market.

Air Lease Corp is an aircraft leasing company based in the United States. However, it derives most of its revenue from the European region. Its business involves purchasing aircraft from renowned manufacturers such as The Boeing Company (Boeing) and Airbus S.A.S and leasing them to airline companies across the world. Its suite of aircraft entails single-aisle narrow-bodied jets and twin-aisle wide-bodied aircraft. The company's primary source of revenue originates from leasing of aircrafts and to a certain extent from the provision of fleet management services to investors and owners of aircraft portfolios.

Guru Investment Theses on Air Lease Corp

KEELEY All Cap Value Fund Comments on Air Lease Corp - Apr 23, 2018

Air Lease Corporation (NYSE:AL) is a leading aircraft leasing company that currently owns and manages a fleet of 253 aircraft. Industry-wide change is being driven by increasing air travel demand from the rising middle-class population in international markets. This has led Air Lease to more than double its owned fleet within five years. Despite continued strong operating performance, the stock was weak due to general fears regarding the impact of tariffs on aircraft demand. Although Boeing was listed as a US company subject to Chinese tariffs, the tariffs were specific to very few models, and even if the tariffs became broader, it would tilt more Chinese airlines to lease rather than purchase which would be beneficial to aircraft lessors like Air Lease. We continue to believe the stock is attractive trading at book value.

Keeley Funds Comments on Air Lease Corp - Oct 24, 2017

Air Lease Corporation (NYSE:AL) is a leading aircraft leasing company based in Los Angeles, CA with more than 200 airline relationships in more than 70 countries. AL currently owns a fleet of 240 aircraft, with more than 75% being the more liquid, popular single-aisle planes, and it is well on its way to more than double its owned fleet within five years. Industry-wide change is being driven by the increasing air travel demand from the rising middle-class population in international markets. While the operating performance of the company has continued to improve steadily, the stock was weak earlier in the year because it did not have any “gain on sale of aircrafts” in the first quarter of 2017. We nonetheless believe management has been prudent in managing its portfolio of aircraft and that such gains on aircraft sales will be lumpy and subject to short-term swings that are not indicative of long-term trends. The stock has rebounded nicely as the operating results continued to remain healthy and gains on aircraft sales rebounded back to their historical averages in the second quarter of 2017. We continue to believe the stock is attractive at current valuation.

Keeley Funds Comments on Air Lease Corp - Apr 27, 2017

Air Lease Corporation (NYSE:AL) is a leading global aircraft leasing company headquartered in Los Angeles, CA. Strong performance during the quarter reflects the company’s continued strong operating results. For 2016, Air Lease grew its revenue by 19% and EBITDA by 25% while maintaining a conservative financial profile – secured debt made up 8% of total debt, which was one of the factors in S&P upgrading its debt to BBB in October 2016. Our initial investment thesis was based on the rising global middle class and expectation of global passenger traffic growing at a healthy rate to double every 15 years. We believe that airline operators, particularly the capital constrained non-US operators will rely more on leasing companies to provide the aircrafts and remove the threat of residual risk. This thesis is playing out as expected. Despite economic and geopolitical issues roiling the travel industry, Air Lease has continued to keep its current fleet fully utilized and has a large order book of 363 aircraft which is 1.4x its current fleet of 267 aircraft, mostly the in-demand wide-body planes. We continue to believe that the stock is trading at a meaningful discount to its intrinsic value and that the quality of the management team combined with the strength of the balance sheet will help the company generate healthy returns.
